awesome vegan news and reviews

for us vegans in los angeles, there sure aren’t very many pizza options. a lot of places have a soy cheese option, but that usually contains casein…some places do offer vegan pizza, but the fake cheese never melts quite right. lucky for us, though, a new all-vegetarian and vegan-friendly pizza parlor has opened up just 30 miles away in cerritos, and dude, it is so worth the drive. we headed out to that’s amore over the weekend and had vegan pizza so good, it tasted vegetarian.

that’s amore is a pure vegetarian pizza kitchen with a large menu full of of entrees, pizzas and sandwiches that can ALL be veganized. seriously, it’s a dream come true. if this place were closer to my house, i’d be there several times a week. i know it sounds too good to be true, so check out there menu here:

my husband and i took a detour to that’s amore last weekend, on our way home from long beach, and seriously…the food was not to be believed. although the menu was massive and tempting, we opted for the build-your-own pizza option, and settled on a pie with vegan cheese, tofurky sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes. wow, can you believe that order? vegan cheese, vegetable toppings and tofurky sausage?!?!?! i don’t know anywhere i could get such a vegan feast, other than my own kitchen. almost all the food at that’s amore is vegan, except they do have a normal cheese option. other than that, you can close your eyes and point at random shit on the menu, order it and be fine. i can’t even express how wonderful this is to me. they also clearly state on the menu that “vegan dishes are cooked with exclusive utensils.” there ya have it: no cross-contamination worries.

our pizza came out of the oven in record time, the thing was bloody huge, and the crust was amazing. definitely the most authentic new york style crust i’ve ever tried since becoming a vegan: thin, chalky and oh so tasty.

not to mention, the VEGAN CHEESE! this shit was melty-ist, most wonderful vegan dairy-style concoction i’ve ever tasted. the super-friendly server told us they use follow your heart cheese, but i assure you, it tasted much better than that. in my experience FYH cheese is pretty stubborn when it comes to melting, but that’s amore somehow gets around the problem. maybe it’s their oven, or the way they shred it…either way, this stuff melts and has the texture of real fucking cheese. amazing.

insanely awesome melting vegan cheese. wowowowowow.

when you fill up on pizza from that’s amore, ask your sweet and helpful server about the dessert options. we inquired and wound up with an incredible, freshly-made vegan cannoli. de-lish! they should really add this stuff to the menu, it would be a tragedy for sweet-seeking vegans to leave that’s amore, never knowing they have incredible desserts.

that’s amore makes me want to move to the oc, full stop. the food is killer, it’s all meat-free, and everything can be veganized. oh oh oh, and they serve wine and beer, what’s not to like?

…well…um….ok, if i wanna get nit-picky, the ambience leaves something to be desired. it’s in a strip mall, the lighting is so bright that it’s annoying, and they play a rotation of 8 really corny italian-themed rat pack songs nonstop, turned up to 11. if i lived in cerritos, that’s amore would definitely be the perfect place to get a pizza to-go. i would only eat in because i live about an hour away, and i would rather put up with a less-than-perfect atmosphere than a reheated pizza.

overall though, that’s amore is incredible. head out to cerritos as soon as you can, and try everything on the menu. it’s gotta be the best, authentic, new york style vegan pizza i’ve ever had.

So glad you enjoyed That’s Amore! :)
It’s like 15 mins away from me and I’m determined to try each & everything thing on their menu. This place is amazing and the owners/staff are super duper nice. The owner is very pleased to hear the great feedback from her customers and she reads up on the reviews. They’re hoping to get a website up soon.

I’m hoping people look past the average exterior and try their amazing food. I really, really want to see this place do well. :)

  5. I’m mandating a trip here asap. I just drooled a little on my lap.

  6. Definitely trying this place today. We only love 12 miles from this place.
Thank you once again for such valuable information.

i hope this place stays around!

  10. Melty vegan cheese! Makes me want to clap. :) Those pizzas look sooo good. You are making me really sad that the only vegan pizza I’ve ever had has come from Little Caesar’s, the pizza chain. Pathetic. I’m glad you liked it so much…it’s awesome when vegan food is so good that it’s worth a 30-mile drive!

Went there for lunch yesterday and I was shaking I was so excited. Garlic bread is great. Chicken Parm is incredible. Pepperoni Pizza to die for. And was great heated up for lunch today. The owners and wait staff are awesome and I’m so excited that this place is 15 minutes from long beach. We’ve waited a long time for place like this. SIck of driving to LA for food. So stoked I can’t even begin to express it.

vique- sound like you had some amazing food! i am jealous! chicken parm, garlic bread and pepperoni are all things i gotta try. damn, i guess i have to just drive out there again. ;)

rubyredvegan- don’t feel bad, for ages my only vegan pizza was the cheeseless hand-tossed variety from pizza hut. it’s good to know other places are starting to come around and offer tasty substitutions.

    just went there again tonight.
can’t get enough of the pizza.
marina was talking about your website quarry :-)

  14. [...] reading about That’s Amore from QuarryGirl a few days ago, the BF and paid them a visit despite it being all the way in Cerritos — [...]

  15. Thanks for the tip about this place. The BF and I went today and thought it was great. I just wish vegan cheese was more cheesy and stringy.

We usually don’t have a problem getting pizza around LA, but it’s nice to have something like That’s Amore around when we want to play it safe.

The BF (the vegan) usually has cheeseless pizza from the following places: Mozza, Joe’s on Santa Monica, and Vito’s.

  16. That sounds awesome. I wish more pizza places would consider adding a vegan cheese option to their menus. It looks delicious!

  17. damn this looks good. I’m gonna try to make the trek out there asap. If the vegan spot couldn’t make it in silver lake, I’m kinda worried for how this place will do in Cerritos. Did it seem busy?

michelle – i freaking LOVE your enthusiasm for this place! it’s so awesome, cause i want them to stay in business too. if i lived within 30 minutes from the place, i can safely say i would go there twice a week. so, i’ve just had the pizza. what should i get next?

  20. Oh my jeebus!!! This looks exciting! Cerritos also has Vegi-Wokery which is tasty Asian styles and I always finagle my own vegan treats in Little India on Pioneer Blvd. nearby.

Sadly, I live in Whittier (hmph) and there is no vegan food nearby for at least 20 minutes so I be cookin’ or drivin’ a lot y’all…

  21. O.K. So my husband and I went last weekend. We’re lucky because we only live 12 miles away. GOD, the pizza was so good. We ordered the rosemary potato pizza. Instead of cheese, they used a bechamel sauce and the potatoes were mashed. The crust was super thin and crispy. We also ordered salads, but they were good at all. We’re already planning what we are going to order next time. I’m drooling just thinking about it.

I reccomend trying the sandwiches or entrees- the sandwiches appear to be smaller versions of the entrees stuffed in really good bread and a couple bucks cheaper. The eggplant parmesana sandwich was amazing, I’ve also had the “that’s amore” one w/sausage which has a lot of good flavor. The sandwiches are cooked in the pizza oven which leaves them nice & just-crunchy-enough. :)

Tizzle, I live in Whittier too! That’s Amore has to be THE closest veg-friendly place around, even closer than One World Vegetarian in West Covina which I LOVE. I miss Veggie Bistro which closed a couple years ago- completely vegan asian/thai place in Uptown.

We have some great Vegan/Vegetarian restaurants here in Montreal though. My dream is to go to Portland one of these days and see what its got!

  26. It’s pretty impressive to find somewhere that does vegan pizza. It’s always struck me as one of the things I’d really miss. It sounds like the music was cheesey enough to make up for it though! :)

The menu also states that all toppings are “vegan”- this includes all “meats”. Plus the staff is very helpful and willing to answer any questions you may have about their menu, cooking methods, etc.

I’ll have to check this place out. Thanks!
