let me start by saying: i think pitfire pizza is awesome and delicious. they have several locations in LA and serve some pretty tasty “artisan” (what does that word REALLY mean?!) pizzas with daiya cheese as an option. i raved about them previously here.
however after eating several screwed WTF? meals at the north hollywood location, i need to voice my frustration! for the most part, i love it. i love ordering at the counter, i love the crisp toppings, the craft beer selection, the sunlit dining area. however, my last 4 pitfire experiences have included vegan orders that accidentally/negligently included animal products. fucked up! here’s the latest:
hit up pitfire today with a group of vegan homies. we scheduled our break from work accordingly—-at noon, before the lunch rush. here’s what went wrong:
-sublime was playing when we arrived, only to be followed by the red hot chili peppers. awful vs terrible.
-after braving the long line, we were told pitfire was out of vegan cheese. our crew had to roll cheeseless. that’s fine, but not so great when you’re getting a bunch of vegans together to have a special lunch.
-my pal’s pizza came out covered in the correct toppings…plus arugula. she mentioned it was wrong, and the staff apologized but didn’t immediately offer her a new pizza. she decided to just eat it, only to find out after one slice that it had random REAL CHEESE shreds streaked across it.
-to be fair, pitfire offered up a gift card, but the damage had been done.
such a weird, uncomfortable dining experience. right? previous to this, i’ve had the following fuck ups: real cheese in my vegan salad (twice), real cheese AND daiya on my parents’ vegan pizza. WHO PUTS REAL CHEESE AND VEGAN CHEESE ON A VEGAN PIZZA?
glad that’s off my chest. i encourage you all to eat at pitfire. it’s great. but if you eat at the valley location, inspect the fuck outta your food!
vg burgers in boulder is closed. but really, who cares!
should i be sad that vg burgers, boulder colorado’s ONLY vegan restaurant, has now closed? i dunno, maybe. but it sucked big time. i went there on my birthday and had the most awful and expensive meal. everything was pre-packaged and not properly cooked. i know places like veggie grill proudly rock the generic frozen gardein in all their dishes, but at least they put some effort into it!
anyways, in memory of vg burgers, here are some snaps of my underwhelming birthday meal—-which cost $30 and tasted like 5. BTW ATTN ALL RESTAURANTS: IF YOU EVER SHUT DOWN, UPDATE YOUR FUCKING WEBSITE!

denver colorado is one of america’s top beer cities, and it’s also home to some of the tastiest vegan food i’ve ever eaten—-who’dve thought! on our latest trip there (you already read about our debaucherous meals at city o’ city), we hit up freshcraft: one of the town’s best beer bars that happens to boast a surprisingly vegan-friendly menu. here’s what we ate:
fresh avocado salad wrap: sliced avocado, marinated rice noodles, shaved cabbage, radicchio, red onion. (no honey vinaigrette!) garnished with cashews and chili sauce. $8
mole bello tacos: cocoa chili marinated roasted mushrooms, southwestern slaw, tomato junks, creamy lime sauce. (this dish is VEGAN by DEFAULT! it even says so on the menu!) $8.75
if you must watch football this weekend, tony’s darts away is the place to do it. they’re going nuts with a vegan super bowl menu that will include: wings with ranch dressing, tortilla chips and five layer dip, frito pie, and jackfruit sliders. the normal menu will be available as well.
oh, and golden road beers will be on sale for $3.50 each. TOUCHDOWN!
on a recent trip to the bay area, we were super lucky to be treated to an epic vegan brunch at the donut farm by none other than laura, the queen of one of our favorite blogs ever: vegansaurus! it was so insanely good. fresh donuts, lots of savory items, and giant portions. dear donut farm, please open in LA. dear vegansaurus crew, i can’t wait for you to come to LA so i can take you out and return the favor. here’s what we ate:
biscuits AND DONUTS and gravy! fucking intense. having a breakfast donut covered in gravy is one of the most gluttonous/crazy things i’ve ever eaten, and i loved it. it came with hash browns too.
breakfast burrito w/ mole and potatoes. topped w/ avocado.
waffles w/ fixins and homemade vegan butter.
good old fashioned scramble w/ toast, potatoes, loads of vegetables.
if i lived in the bay area, i’d be at the pepples brunch every weekend! no doubt.
i know that on my old blog, i posted about the vegan options at yard house several times…and i was super stoked when they started carrying gardein. after some back and forth with their staff in person and their PR company via email though, i’ve determined that it’s probably not safe to eat the gardein options there. the yard house prides itself on its ambiguity when it comes to vegan items, and though they have a menu full of the most popular fake meat on the planet, they refuse to confirm that they offer even one vegan item. i’ll spend my money and my calories elsewhere.
