today’s episode of quarrygirl presents features m cafe de chaya, my favorite spot in los angeles to get decadent yet healthy food. the restaurant focuses on contemporary macrobiotic cuisine, and other than fish, the entire menu is vegan. whether you’re craving a hearty burger, a slap up breakfast, or something light like sushi or salad, m cafe has it all. we caught up with chef lee gross to talk about healthy eating and the best dishes for everyone at m cafe. check it out!
technique aside, the carrot dog blew my mind. it was soft and flavorful with vegetable toppings, spicy mustard and sriracha ketchup (!), served on a fluffy bun. a word to the vegans: only the parker bun and gluten-free bun are suitable for us. the others contain egg or dairy.

i’m super excited because today’s video is on our favorite pub in los angeles, tony’s darts away. many of you are probably familiar with the numerous meatless sausage options at tony’s…but did you know about the long list of inventive rotating daily specials, most of which are vegan? we caught up with chef randy st. clair and learned how he makes traditional meat offerings vegan, as well as his favorite vegetable based dishes. if you haven’t been to tony’s darts away yet, definitely check it out. the food and beer cannot be beat.
totally obsessed with this recipe. it’s super simple. all you do is dump ingredients into a bread machine and hit start, and three hours later you have delicious turkey-flavored seitan. give it a shot!
VEGAN GIRL SCOUT COOKIES! a public service announcement.
hey guys! i just wanna make a quick little public service announcement on how to find vegan girl scout cookies. as you may or may not know, girl scouts of america get their cookies from one of two bakeries—-little brownies (which has no vegan options) and abc (which has a few vegan options). if you find girl scouts selling abc cookies, the thin mints, peanut butter patties, thanks-a-lot and lemonades are all animal free. SCORE.
for a quick and easy way to tell which bakery the cookies are from, pay attention to the cookie names. little brownies brands their peanut butter cookies as “tag-a-longs” while abc calls them “peanut butter patties”…therefore if you run into girl scouts selling “peanut butter patties”, you are good to go. however, if they’re selling “tag-a-longs”, you are outta luck.
unfortunately the girl scouts in LA get their cookies from little brownie bakers, but vegan cookies can be found just south in orange county where abc is the bakery of choice. my friend david who lives down there was kind enough to send me a few boxes of thin mints and thanks-a-lots, and i’m kinda freaking out. they’re so good, just like i remember, and i haven’t eaten girl scout cookies in over ten years. if you feel like making the trip to the OC to buy some of these babies, you can use this super convenient tool called the girl scout cookie stalker to find out where girls will be selling cookies.
now go stalk some girl scouts and stock up on thin mints!
people may not realize it, but due to ingredients like butter and gelatin, traditional rice crispy treats aren’t vegan…or even vegetarian! in this video clara shows us how to make cruelty-free raspberry rice crispy treats that taste even better than the original using vegan substitutes like earth balance and dandies.

this weekend just got a whole lot better because clara’s cakes added donuts to the menu at their sunday atwater village farm pop-up event. it has a valentine’s day theme, so you’ll be able to get heart pocket pies, chocolate caliente cookie sandwiches, red velvet cupcakes, and now…DONUTS! vegan donuts are pretty hard to come by in LA, and clara’s are incredible, so you don’t wanna miss this pop up!
so excited about the upcoming launch of dairy tree, a brand new vegan cheese made right here in LA!
their first release is going to be bleu cheese, which makes me super stoked because i have never tasted a decent version of that. i know people who have sampled dairy tree, and i have heard nothing but rave reviews. plus the chef behind it is sara from the vegan spot, and if you guys remember that place, they had the best vegan cheese in the land.be sure to sign up for updates!!!

i’m so excited about today’s video with masa of echo park! as you probably know, i’m a huge pizza fan, and masa makes my all time favorite vegan version—an authentic chicago deep dish with teese soy cheese. we caught up with owner rob rowe and learned what makes the deep dish special, why it takes so long to bake, and which menu items everyone can enjoy at masa. check it:
i wish i could be more like owner mellissa morgan aka ms. cupcake. disappointed in the lack of british vegan baked goods when she moved to england from canada, she took matters into her own hands and started making treats in her tiny flat and selling them at a market stall. just three years later, ms. cupcake is a world famous bakery in brixton with over 150 different cupcake varieties, several other dessert lines, savory items, and a cookbook on the way.

vegan fish and chips at coach & horses, london's first vegetarian pub!
what a time to be alive! london now has it’s very own vegetarian pub—-and i’m not talking about new age hippie stuff—-it’s a proper old traditional pub with meatless versions of traditional pub food! norman’s coach and horses in soho has been well known in the west end for years, and in 2012 the new owner decided to give it an all vegetarian menu with lots of vegan options. we had the “tofush and chips” with vegan tartar sauce…unbelievable! i have eaten vegan fish and chips a few times in my life, and this was by far the best. it even had nori mixed in with the tofu to give it a sea-like flavor.
be warned, coach and horses is still getting their act together when it comes to serving lunch. on one occasion we arrived and were informed food wouldn’t be served until the evening because of a chef scheduling issue. the owner was very apologetic though, and offered to make it up to us on our next visit. definitely try this place out if you’re ever in london. eating tasty vegan food in a lovely old pub was one of the culinary highlights of my life and i can’t wait to do it again.
unfortunately, vegan mexican cuisine can be hard to find, thanks to traditionally prevalent ingredients like lard and chicken stock…but hugo’s tacos eschews those animal-based additives in favor of healthier alternatives. an offshoot of the popular hugo’s restaurants brand, the taco stand has two los angeles locations specializing in authentic fare with a fresh vegan twist. we sat down with owner tom kaplan who filled us in on his favorite dishes, the inspiration for the menu, and why everyone loves the vegan food at hugo’s tacos.

world vegan day at two boots: FREE PIZZA and music!
hey guys! thursday is world vegan day, and we’re teaming up with two boots pizza to celebrate! between 6-8pm both LA two boots locations will be giving out FREE slices of the new quarry girl vegan pizza (designed by me!) which comes piled high with san marzano tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, artichoke, fresh garlic, and a swirl of basil pesto. after thursday, the pizza will be available for one week…so make sure you get a chance to eat it.
in addition to free pizza, the echo park location will have free live music by LA’s own moses campbell. they’re an awesome band, and if you missed them at the el rey a couple weeks ago, this is your chance to make up for it. (huge thanks to clara from clara’s cakes for suggesting them).

heads up: one of our absolute favorite los angeles haunts, the pub at golden road brewing, has added a slew of new tasty vegan options to its menu. as if i don’t hang out there enough already… additions include: jackfruit tacos (2 for $4, pictured above!), french fries, the fried ALT (ipa battered avocado, lettuce, tomato) sandwich, the southwest burger, and vegan oreo cheesecake. check it out!
went to seattle last week and while i was there, i visited 2 upscale mexican fast food chains that i’d never been to before: taco del mar and qdoba. both serve up awesome gigantic vegan-friendly burritos, but taco del mar comes out on top for having the word “vegan” on their menu, and for making my favorite fast food burrito to date. i’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

i went for the whole wheat tortilla, but white is also an option.
inside was cilantro lime rice, black beans, guacamole and salsa. very chipotle-esque, but even better. for a list of what’s vegan at qdoba, check out the vegan eating out site.
i love burritos, and both of these babies earn high marks from me. like i said earlier, taco del mar’s was extra exceptional…so definitely make it a point to eat there if you ever have the chance.
we are very lucky to have sage vegan bistro in los angeles. i’ve only eaten there a handful of times, but on each visit i’ve been astounded by the high quality of the food and the inventiveness of the menu. where else can you get fried mac n cheese balls, a croissant club sandwich, and potato broccoli pierogies—-all animal-free—-all in one place? they’ve got everything from comfort food to haute cuisine, brunch through dinner, and desserts provided by kind kreme, the best vegan ice cream maker in LA. what’s not to love? i hit up sage with brittany recently for the first time in years and loved every bite of it.
french lentil soup in a bread bowl - fantastic. vegan soup in a bread bowl is super hard to find and sage does it perfectly.
banh mi sandwich - this was britt’s and she loved it.
from here on out, i make a vow to eat at sage more often. and next time, i’m gonna order dessert. i deserve it.
