went to seattle last week and while i was there, i visited 2 upscale mexican fast food chains that i’d never been to before: taco del mar and qdoba. both serve up awesome gigantic vegan-friendly burritos, but taco del mar comes out on top for having the word “vegan” on their menu, and for making my favorite fast food burrito to date. i’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:
taco del mar beauty wrapped up with a side of hot salsa.
just look at that spinach tortilla, one of many vegan flavors!
it’s what’s inside that counts: black beans (although there are other vegan bean options!), seasoned rice, 3 types of salsa, and pico de gallo. for a full list of what’s vegan at taco del mar (and there’s a lot!) check out their website.
and now for qdoba…
veggie burrito bomb!
i went for the whole wheat tortilla, but white is also an option.
inside was cilantro lime rice, black beans, guacamole and salsa. very chipotle-esque, but even better. for a list of what’s vegan at qdoba, check out the vegan eating out site.
i love burritos, and both of these babies earn high marks from me. like i said earlier, taco del mar’s was extra exceptional…so definitely make it a point to eat there if you ever have the chance.
burrito at el farolito in san francisco. the bay area is known for its bomb mexican food, and this divey establishment in the mission district is both vegan-friendly and LEGIT delicious.
laura from vegansaurus turned me onto this place, saying they offered the best vegan burrito in town. it comes shoved full of black or pinto beans (those are both vegan!), rice, pico de gallo, and avocado. additionally, the restaurant is equipped with a huge salsa bar boasting fresh jalapenos and crazy hot sauces, plus free chips with your order—-score! while i haven’t eaten every vegan burrito in SF, i can definitely say that this is one of the top 2 burritos i’ve ever eaten in my life. massive, delicious, authentic, vegan. it’s battling pokez for the throne.
if you’re ever in SF, hit up el farolito! (i think they have several locations)
denver colorado is one of america’s top beer cities, and it’s also home to some of the tastiest vegan food i’ve ever eaten—-who’dve thought! on our latest trip there (you already read about our debaucherous meals at city o’ city), we hit up freshcraft: one of the town’s best beer bars that happens to boast a surprisingly vegan-friendly menu. here’s what we ate:
fresh avocado salad wrap: sliced avocado, marinated rice noodles, shaved cabbage, radicchio, red onion. (no honey vinaigrette!) garnished with cashews and chili sauce. $8
mole bello tacos: cocoa chili marinated roasted mushrooms, southwestern slaw, tomato junks, creamy lime sauce. (this dish is VEGAN by DEFAULT! it even says so on the menu!) $8.75
drown it all in some oskar blues hot sauce and i’m good to go.
oh we also drank the shit outta several avery beers. i promise to take pictures of them next time i go.
denver rules, and don’t let anyone ever tell you any different.
on a recent trip to the bay area, we were super lucky to be treated to an epic vegan brunch at the donut farm by none other than laura, the queen of one of our favorite blogs ever: vegansaurus! it was so insanely good. fresh donuts, lots of savory items, and giant portions. dear donut farm, please open in LA. dear vegansaurus crew, i can’t wait for you to come to LA so i can take you out and return the favor. here’s what we ate:
biscuits AND DONUTS and gravy! fucking intense. having a breakfast donut covered in gravy is one of the most gluttonous/crazy things i’ve ever eaten, and i loved it. it came with hash browns too.
breakfast burrito w/ mole and potatoes. topped w/ avocado.
waffles w/ fixins and homemade vegan butter.
good old fashioned scramble w/ toast, potatoes, loads of vegetables.
if i lived in the bay area, i’d be at the pepples brunch every weekend! no doubt.
the weekend is almost here which means two days of BRUNCH coming up at tony’s darts away from 10am-afternoonish. this only happens on saturday and sunday, so get with it. my favorite thing thus far is the breakfast burrito: quinoa & tofu all scrambled up, onions and salsa in a giant tortilla. it normally comes with daiya and bell peppers—-but i opt out of both.
is that a beer at 10am? it sure is!
