VIDEO: quarrygirl presents masa of echo park. authentic chicago deep dish pizza veganized!
i’m so excited about today’s video with masa of echo park! as you probably know, i’m a huge pizza fan, and masa makes my all time favorite vegan version—an authentic chicago deep dish with teese soy cheese. we caught up with owner rob rowe and learned what makes the deep dish special, why it takes so long to bake, and which menu items everyone can enjoy at masa. check it:
in this week’s edition of our new vegan video series, we catch up with mollie englehart, the owner of sage vegan bistro and kindkreme dairy-free ice cream parlors. sage has been open less than 2 years, but has already gained a reputation as one of the best vegan spots in los angeles, and is definitely one of my personal favorites. similarly, kindkreme is the go-to place in LA for vegan dessert and has already opened 3 locations! in this video, mollie, who was born and raised vegan, fills us in on what inspired her to open kindkreme and why all foodies should check out sage.
world vegan day at two boots: FREE PIZZA and music!
hey guys! thursday is world vegan day, and we’re teaming up with two boots pizza to celebrate! between 6-8pm both LA two boots locations will be giving out FREE slices of the new quarry girl vegan pizza (designed by me!) which comes piled high with san marzano tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, artichoke, fresh garlic, and a swirl of basil pesto. after thursday, the pizza will be available for one week…so make sure you get a chance to eat it.
in addition to free pizza, the echo park location will have free live music by LA’s own moses campbell. they’re an awesome band, and if you missed them at the el rey a couple weeks ago, this is your chance to make up for it. (huge thanks to clara from clara’s cakes for suggesting them).
really hope to see you all at two boots on thursday! come try my new pizza, dance in the street, and celebrate veganism in general. here are the official event deets:
Two Boots & Quarrygirl World Vegan Day Celebration: FREE PIZZA and Live Music!
we are very lucky to have sage vegan bistro in los angeles. i’ve only eaten there a handful of times, but on each visit i’ve been astounded by the high quality of the food and the inventiveness of the menu. where else can you get fried mac n cheese balls, a croissant club sandwich, and potato broccoli pierogies—-all animal-free—-all in one place? they’ve got everything from comfort food to haute cuisine, brunch through dinner, and desserts provided by kind kreme, the best vegan ice cream maker in LA. what’s not to love? i hit up sage with brittany recently for the first time in years and loved every bite of it.
french lentil soup in a bread bowl - fantastic. vegan soup in a bread bowl is super hard to find and sage does it perfectly.
banh mi sandwich - this was britt’s and she loved it.
from here on out, i make a vow to eat at sage more often. and next time, i’m gonna order dessert. i deserve it.
heads up! starting today, two boots pizza in echo park will be selling vegan cookies for just 75¢!! if the cookies are popular, they’ll be stocked on the regular. go buy some along with a giant pizza, arguably the best in LA, and have a happy weekend!
fuck yes. LA has been in dire need of good vegan donuts, and finally the wait is over. starting now hedgehog coffee shop in echo park will be stocking limited quantities of twice baked vegan donuts on fridays and weekends starting at 9am in the following flavors: maple glazed with coconut bacon, maple glazed with crumb topping, and chocolate glazed with sprinkles. GO GET SOME. if the donuts sell well, they’ll become a regular fixture at hedgehog which would be good news for everyone!
if you haven’t heard of twice baked vegan, it’s a fantastic little local bakery that makes some of the most delicious and inventive treats i’ve ever tried. seriously, go go go get some donuts. i will race you to the maple bacon one. it’s miiiiine!
follow @twicebakedvegan on twitter to track their donut drop offs, and you may also want to call hedgehog for availability in case they sell out.
brunch insanity at mohawk bend in echo park with my girls. starting to the left and going up clockwise, you’re looking at: hearts of palm “crab cakes” with hollandaise sauce, bottomless sangria, a pizza bagel with vegan cheese and seitan sausage, a “banh mi pizza” (marinated tofu, pickled carrots & daikon, jalapenos, herb salad, sriracha aioli), an asparagus potato pizza with leek puree and nutritional yeast, and a ballast point yellowtail beer. yes, this place rules.
vegan truffle mac n cheese calzone from mohawk bend. this was a special over the weekend and it was hands down the best calzone i’ve eaten in my life. please bring it to the normal menu.
just in time for vegan pizza day, mohawk bend in echo park has changed their menu and rolled out some new and exciting vegan pizzas. we hit them up yesterday and tried what turned out to be the best pie i’ve eaten in ages: asparagus and potato with caramelized onions, garlic, and leek purée. genius!
they also have a new VEGAN BANH MI pizza that comes with tofu and sriracha aioli. you know that’s what i’m getting next time.
heads up: mohawk in echo park recently hired a new awesome chef (garbs!) and he’s been upping the bar for vegan food in LA ever since. i’ve been in awe of the cauliflower buffalo wings for a while, but now he’s busting out original vegan pizza creations each week for meatless mondays.
last week’s (pictured above) was so epic that it may even find a place on the normal menu soon! it consisted of: hanger 24 winter warmer BBQ sauce, vidalia onions, braised collard greens, sliced potatoes, and incredibly creamy “blue cheese”…
can’t wait to see what monday’s vegan pizza creation will be. see you there?
just a few snaps from last night’s el falafel pop up by hot knives in echo park.
frustrated by the lack of decent falafel options in los angeles, the boys set out to make the best balls in town…and they succeeded.
it was a late night, cash only, eat on the street type of operation, but the food was incredible and the dudes sold out—-150 sandwiches from 10pm to 1am!
i always have very high expectations for hot knives’ food, and this falafel was better than i could have imagined. my only question is: when’s the next pop up?!
today i met up with the team from the roxy and the folks from tony’s darts away at mohawk bend to discuss the next LA vegan beer fest. it’s happening this spring, and we’ll announce the dates soon, so lookout! until then, feast your eyes on all the amazing food we ate at mohawk:
broccoli soup
a v is for vegan burger and a salad daze pizza
vegan buffalo wings made from cauliflower (my new favorite!)
the flash gordon salad (this was incredible. trust me, order it!)
and of course, beer.
can’t wait to fill you in on the latest LA vegan beer fest deets! this year is gonna be epic.
