i’ve been out of town on vacation for just over a week, and i really wasn’t looking forward to coming home, but on my arrival i was super excited to find 2 things i’ve been waiting for in LA: gardein beefless sliders and beyond meat. what a warm welcome home. i have loved the adorable gardein sliders since i tried them at natural products expo west back in march, and beyond meat since i got a sneak preview at madeleine bistro. both products are pretty big steps forward in meat substitutions, so be sure to try ‘em!
i found the sliders at ralphs on sunset in hollywood (though i’m sure they’re available at other places too) and beyond meat is now available at all whole foods in southern california. what a time to be alive!
(as always, click the photos to enlarge and see captions.)
i hit up natural products expo west for a couple hours today and had a blast! i didn’t get to see everything, not even close—-talk about vegan overload!—-but i did sample some great new and classic products. most exciting were the little gardein sliders i posted about earlier, the temptation soft serve machine at the chicago vegan foods booth, and some insane new flavored vegenaise varieties from follow your heart. (i’m talking horseradish and tartar sauce!) mind blowing. ALSO, austin-based queso makers food for lovers (one of my favorite brands ever) has come out with a new killer chipotle mayo and will soon be releasing a fat free country gravy. already having fantasies about that. if the gravy is half as good as the queso, i know i’ll be adding it to practically every meal.
one booth i didn’t make it to today, and i’m so bummed, is eat pastry. they make fantastic vegan cookie dough and have recently sent me samples of their new sugar cookie flavor. outta this world.
i know this isn’t as in depth as my previous expo west coverage, but i thought you all would enjoy a few snaps.
LA food truck gets vegan gardein menu!
not all gardein news is bad news: green truck in los angeles now has a vegan gardein menu and it looks insane! apparently it’s part of gardein’s new cheat on meat campaign, and i’m all about it.
here are some photos of the new green truck gardein grub via herenah and royalefatale on instagram:

gardein food truck offerings!
i can’t wait to try it! hey green truck, please keep this stuff on board indefinitely…!!
vegans: don’t eat gardein at yard house
i know that on my old blog, i posted about the vegan options at yard house several times…and i was super stoked when they started carrying gardein. after some back and forth with their staff in person and their PR company via email though, i’ve determined that it’s probably not safe to eat the gardein options there. the yard house prides itself on its ambiguity when it comes to vegan items, and though they have a menu full of the most popular fake meat on the planet, they refuse to confirm that they offer even one vegan item. i’ll spend my money and my calories elsewhere.
below is an abbreviated email exchange with someone on team yard house, which started with them sending me a press release about gardein items:
the first is the original email from yard house’s PR team about the gardein menu items:
then my response:
and their reply:
fucking bummer! what a wasted opportunity to offer vegan items at a huge chain restaurant. yard house should take a clue from zpizza and expand their customer base to include vegans.
if you have any more info on yard house’s continuation or departure from lameness, let me know.
