sage vegan in echo park
we are very lucky to have sage vegan bistro in los angeles. i’ve only eaten there a handful of times, but on each visit i’ve been astounded by the high quality of the food and the inventiveness of the menu. where else can you get fried mac n cheese balls, a croissant club sandwich, and potato broccoli pierogies—-all animal-free—-all in one place? they’ve got everything from comfort food to haute cuisine, brunch through dinner, and desserts provided by kind kreme, the best vegan ice cream maker in LA. what’s not to love? i hit up sage with brittany recently for the first time in years and loved every bite of it.
french lentil soup in a bread bowl - fantastic. vegan soup in a bread bowl is super hard to find and sage does it perfectly.
banh mi sandwich - this was britt’s and she loved it.
from here on out, i make a vow to eat at sage more often. and next time, i’m gonna order dessert. i deserve it.
BTW, sage vegan bistro is BYOB. and it’s a great place to eat before a night out at the echo.
vegan at lollapalooza day 2! didn’t eat a ton on saturday at lolla, because the fest was evacuated due to thunderstorms (see above!) and by the time it resumed, we were doing other stuff across town. i did manage to try some cold shiitake spring rolls from the rock n roll noodle company (delish) and some vegan black bean soup from the artists’ backstage catering (!!!). a bit surprised there wasn’t more vegan stuff backstage for the bands. maybe today will be different since sigur ros is performing…
i had been looking forward to the sexy vegan cookbook for ages. brian (the author) used to write incredible guest posts for my old blog, and i knew from personal experience that his home delivery service was delicious. naturally when the highly anticipated cookbook arrived in the mail, i had no idea what to make first.
luckily, brian helped me with the decision. his book is littered with witty side notes, and in the soup section, he mentions that soup is his favorite food. it was decided: i’d first make a soup recipe. while thumbing through the several appetizing options, i noticed that brian called out minestrone as his favorite soup. the favorite of the favorite! i bought all the ingredients that day and set out to make the minestrone that night.
i’m happy to report that it lived up to the double favorite bar in every way. it was simple to make, healthy, flavorful and hearty. it coved all the necessary bases: beans for protein, noodles for carbs, and loads of fresh vegetables.
can’t wait to work my way through the rest of the sexy vegan cookbook!
