their first release is going to be bleu cheese, which makes me super stoked because i have never tasted a decent version of that. i know people who have sampled dairy tree, and i have heard nothing but rave reviews. plus the chef behind it is sara from the vegan spot, and if you guys remember that place, they had the best vegan cheese in the land. be sure to sign up for updates!!!

Vegan Pizza Day in London! UPDATED

UPDATE: we’ve got the specifics on the karma free pizza deal! on saturday june 30th, they’ll be offering a regular vegan pizza with a portion of garlic bread for a tenner. that’s a steal! thanks fat gay vegan for the info in the comments!

don’t let living on the other side of the pond stop you from honoring vegan pizza day! of course you an can always make your own animal-free pie at home, but now londoners can also get in on the restaurant fun, as karma free pizza in harrow announced on facebook yesterday that they will be partaking in the vegan pizza day celebrations on june 30th.

i’ve never been to karma free pizza, but from what i can gather, they’re the only pizzeria in london offering cheezly pizza on a regular basis. have you guys had cheezly? it’s fantastic! plus karma free has gained a favorable review (which includes multiple pizza, garlic bread, and dough ball photos!) from the respectable UK blog to happy vegans.

pictured above is the vegan cosmic explosion pizza as seen on to happy vegans.

fuck yeah. non-fat vegan scallion spread on a fresh crispy bagel. bagel and bean in NYC. broadway & 54th.

vegusto vegan cheese. america needs this. seriously, i’ve tried it twice now and it completely obliterates the other vegan cheese brands available here in LA. while it doesn’t ship to america at the moment, i was able to obtain some in paris and convince the fine people at cruzer to put it on a pizza for me.

let’s just say the meeting of the world’s best vegan cheese and california’s only vegan pizzeria was a match made in heaven. this outcome was incredible. cruzer always does it right, but the addition of vegusto took their already stellar pizza to the next level.

vegusto doesn’t have stretch factor of other brands, but the flavor is eerily cheese-like. it tastes like funk rather than science.

vegusto, if you’re reading this, please come to LA. and to everyone else: hit up cruzer pizza!! that place rules. the food is good, the staff is friendly, and they have a pizza named after yours truly.

i hit up natural products expo west for a couple hours today and had a blast! i didn’t get to see everything, not even close—-talk about vegan overload!—-but i did sample some great new and classic products. most exciting were the little gardein sliders i posted about earlier, the temptation soft serve machine at the chicago vegan foods booth, and some insane new flavored vegenaise varieties from follow your heart. (i’m talking horseradish and tartar sauce!) mind blowing. ALSO, austin-based queso makers food for lovers (one of my favorite brands ever) has come out with a new killer chipotle mayo and will soon be releasing a fat free country gravy. already having fantasies about that. if the gravy is half as good as the queso, i know i’ll be adding it to practically every meal.

one booth i didn’t make it to today, and i’m so bummed, is eat pastry. they make fantastic vegan cookie dough and have recently sent me samples of their new sugar cookie flavor. outta this world.

i know this isn’t as in depth as my previous expo west coverage, but i thought you all would enjoy a few snaps.

today is national pancake day, so why don’t you make these VEGAN MAC AND CHEESE PANCAKES? huge thanks to brittany for the recipe.

pitfire pizza: get it together!

let me start by saying: i think pitfire pizza is awesome and delicious. they have several locations in LA and serve some pretty tasty “artisan” (what does that word REALLY mean?!) pizzas with daiya cheese as an option. i raved about them previously here.

however after eating several screwed WTF? meals at the north hollywood location, i need to voice my frustration! for the most part, i love it. i love ordering at the counter, i love the crisp toppings, the craft beer selection, the sunlit dining area. however, my last 4 pitfire experiences have included vegan orders that accidentally/negligently included animal products. fucked up! here’s the latest:

hit up pitfire today with a group of vegan homies. we scheduled our break from work accordingly—-at noon, before the lunch rush. here’s what went wrong:

-sublime was playing when we arrived, only to be followed by the red hot chili peppers. awful vs terrible.

-after braving the long line, we were told pitfire was out of vegan cheese. our crew had to roll cheeseless. that’s fine, but not so great when you’re getting a bunch of vegans together to have a special lunch.

-my pal’s pizza came out covered in the correct toppings…plus arugula. she mentioned it was wrong, and the staff apologized but didn’t immediately offer her a new pizza. she decided to just eat it, only to find out after one slice that it had random REAL CHEESE shreds streaked across it.

-to be fair, pitfire offered up a gift card, but the damage had been done.

such a weird, uncomfortable dining experience. right? previous to this, i’ve had the following fuck ups: real cheese in my vegan salad (twice), real cheese AND daiya on my parents’ vegan pizza. WHO PUTS REAL CHEESE AND VEGAN CHEESE ON A VEGAN PIZZA?

glad that’s off my chest. i encourage you all to eat at pitfire. it’s great. but if you eat at the valley location, inspect the fuck outta your food!

another treasure from this week’s bistro box: vegan strawberry mascarpone crepes.
i’ll post all the pictures from this week’s haul eventually…

fucking insane baked potato from golden road brewing: half a russet topped with spicy vegan cheese, bell peppers, and fried onions. it looks so good, right?!
sadly, i couldn’t eat any of this because i HATE BELL PEPPERS and they can’t do it w/out. wah wah.
anyways, my dad ate this when we went to lunch and he loved it. he loved it so much, he ordered ANOTHER ONE. how often does that happen in real life. double meal. yes!

best vegan cheese yet: vegusto

if you know me, you know i’m always on the hunt for the greatest vegan cheese ever. well as of right now, i can tell you that vegusto is the clear winner. i’ve tried pretty much every brand out there, and this one is by far the best.

i tried this swiss-made stuff in paris, and unfortunately it’s not available in the US yet. (rumor is, it will be later this year!) if you ever get a chance to eat or buy vegusto, DO IT. it blows all the other ones (daiya, cheezly, follow your heart) out of the water.

i eat, i drink, i take lots of photos.
